Frequently Asked Questions

  1. enCORETM Composer:   How can I learn more about the options included in this software feature?
enCORETM Composer software includes both Physician Reports and Business Reports. Physician Reports allows the user to input their recommendations and/or evaluation of a patient's results based upon the analysis results. Business Reports is a general query application of the patient database. Patient lists can be generated based upon the criteria specified. Detailed instructions for creating both types of reports are outlined in the Composer Application Training Guide. Access the training guide by selecting Composer through the Help menu in enCORETM software.
Note:  The training guide is available in software version5.0 and above...

  2. Contrast Agents and Their Effect on DEXA:
There has been little work on the effect of contrast agents and DEXA. Our general recommendation is that the patient should wait for 72 hours to be scanned, to eliminate the possibility of an effect on the measurement. Patients who have had myelograms in the past may never be able to be scanned, given the long term retention of that media. In general, however, one only needs to wait until the radioactive or contrast material has cleared the system. This generally occurs within 72 hours (or longer with slower metabolic rates). If you are knowledgeable about transit times for specific agents, you can use that time as a guide when to scan.

  3. Additional Lumbar Vertebrae:   How do I label the spine?
Accurate number is especially important in patients with four or six lumbar vertebrae. When in doubt, numbering should begin at the level of the iliac crest, typically corresponding to the L4-L5 disk space.

  4. How do I clean the table pad of my GE LUNAR Densitometer?
Try using a damp sponge with a little mild soap. Don't soak the area! We don't want the internal padding to become soaked because the scanner may "see" the water as tissue during a scan.

  5. BUA, SOS, Stiffness Index:   What do they mean?
BUA (Broadband Ultrasound Attenuation) is the interactionof ultrasounds with the medium in which they propagate. BUA can be influenced by bone density, trabeculae quantity, spacing, and orientation. SOS (Speed of Sound) represents the velocity of ultrasound transmission through the bone. Stiffness Index is a combination of BUA and SOD expressed in percentage of young adults (% T-score). Stiffness index results expressed as T-scores are used to assist physicians in the diagnosis of osteoporosis in the same way as are T-scores obtained by X-ray absorptiometry.

  6. Heel Preference:   Is there a difference between measuring a patient's right and left heels?
Publications have shown that among normal patients (no history of disease or fracture), there is no statistically significant difference between left and right measurements of the same patient; however, the variation from left and right is approximately 5%. It is, however, important to always perform follow-up measurements on the same foot to monitor change over time.
